Three's A Crowd was created with a new application called The Movies by Lionhead Studios.
The Movies is essentially a game in which one can build and manage their own movie studio. On the positive side, it is very simple to use, allowing one to create a story, shoot the film and even do post-production editing relatively quickly. It is also educational, since in "Game" mode, one learns a bit about what it takes to run a studio, manage temperamental movie stars, promote new releases and deal with the press. There's also the "Sandbox" mode, which allows machinema filmmakers to simply use the application as a tool for shooting and editing footage.
One also learns to work within rather narrow creative parameters. The Movies has a few minor "bugs" that become apparent when films are exported outside the game. It is also quite limited, at present. Although one can create actors, their ability to express emotion is disappointing compared to Sims 2. On set, it is not possible to direct actors - they are confined to specific animations within a series of predefined scenes. Many of these can be modified slightly using the "Advanced Movie Making" feature, but had we been able, we'd have made different choices in the storyline and cinematography. To be fair, this is a VERY new application, and we understand the programmers are planning bug fixes as well as additional tools and "mods" as time goes on.
